My personal tool box
![]()
Every developer has its tool box grown over the years – same with me. Some the tools became quite worn but very convenient. Here are some of my favorite tools.
This is one of my central apps – always at hand. After testing Eclipse PDT, Zend Studio, NetBeans more than one time, I always returned to it. It’s fast, powerful, easily extendable. (There is also a port for Windows users called E-Texteditor. So, no excuses!)
It’s good practice to keep track of the development using a version control system. I use svnX git to manage my code (with git-svn as a frontend for svn).
I use Transmit to access my servers via (S)FTP. It’s not perfect, but it works well with TextMate.
I often have to check and change database entries while developing an application. Sequel Pro is really a convenient front end for SQL databases-and it’s free!
Merlin is a native Mac OS X project management tool. It’s much better (in sense of efficiency for the common developer) than MS Project, which I also know very well.
At the end of the day, I have to write an invoice (or statement ;-)). I do that with Billings.
I didn’t know about Sequel Pro. I was still using the old CocoaMySQL. A nice re-discovering :)
You’re talking about advanced technologies, evangelise the great typo3, incapable to create a blog you’re using WordPress.
No doubt, TYPO3 is a great tool, and so is WordPress. Do you have any comment on this article?
Every tool has its advantages and its disadvantages. TYPO3 is great for building big websites with many involved people. But WordPress is a good choice for running a blog.
I tried Espresso, Smultron and many more tools for coding, perhaps i should give Textmate a try.
For CSS i would add CSSEdit which i really love. For FTP i would add Cyberduck, which works perfect with Smultron, Espresso and Textmate. Best of all it’s open source.
Hi Jochen,
bought your new Book. Will read it in the next days :)
Are there any new tools you are using now? :)
